Timing is Everything: When Should You Start Weaning a Thoroughbred Foal?
Weaning is one of the most critical milestones in a Thoroughbred foal’s early life. Done well, it sets the stage for healthy development, confidence, and future athletic potential. Done poorly, it can lead to a number of physical and behavioural challenges.
But one question continues to generate debate: When is the right time to start weaning?
It’s Not Just About Age
Traditionally, foals are weaned around six months of age. But experts increasingly agree that age alone shouldn't dictate weaning timing. Instead, weaning should be based on the individual foal’s physical maturity, behavioural readiness, and the overall health of both mare and foal.
Some signs a foal may be ready for weaning include:
- Grazing and eating concentrate feeds independently and drinking from the mare less frequently
- Becoming increasingly independent from the mare and showing curiosity and confidence in their environment
Conversely, early weaning when it is necessary requires careful planning and extra support.
Why Timing Matters
Poorly timed weaning can increase the risk of :
- Gastric ulcers and other stress-related illness
- Developmental orthopaedic disease (DOD)
- Stereotypical behaviour and anxiety
- Poor weight gain or loss of condition
Conversely, a well-timed weaning allows for smooth nutritional transitions, strong social development with peer groups, and minimal trauma for both foal and mare.
Tailoring Weaning to the Individual
No two foals are the same. The confident colt bounding across the paddock may be ready a few weeks earlier than a quieter, more timid filly. Observing their behaviour and appetite, and considering factors like season, facilities, and handling history, all play into a weaning timeline that supports long-term success.
