Measuring Carbon on Stud Farms: The TBA Stud Farm Carbon Calculator

The TBA Stud Farm Carbon Calculator is a digital tool that estimates the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a stud’s activities, and helps to identify opportunities to improve efficiency, resilience and profitability.

The calculator accounts for emissions across six key areas of a breeding operation:

  1. Land Use
  2. Horses
  3. Manure Management
  4. Feed and Bedding
  5. Energy Use
  6. Horse Transport

Calculating a carbon footprint offers several practical benefits for breeders, including:

  • Highlighting emission hotspots
  • Improving efficiency, often leading to reduced input costs
  • Recognising carbon storage in grassland, soils, trees, and hedgerows

By understanding both carbon emissions and carbon storage, stud farms can make informed decisions that support the production of thoroughbreds while maintaining healthy soils and productive grassland.

Support Available for Breeders

To encourage more stud farms to calculate their carbon emissions, the TBA are offering a limited number of soil and herbage analysis packages, including bespoke consultancy support. This is available to breeders who complete a baseline footprint using the TBA Stud Farm Carbon Calculator.
