Get to know Joe Grimwade
Joe Grimwade LVO brings over 40 years of experience in the bloodstock industry. His career began on a small family stud in the West Country, where he developed core stud skills and a sound understanding of operating within tight financial constraints.
Joe joined the National Stud as Assistant to the Manager, where he developed several key diversification projects, including the Student Training Course, the Apprenticeship Scheme, the Annual Trade Fair & Stallion Parade, and the Broodmare Owners Club. He was later promoted to Manager, taking on responsibility for the running of a busy public stud.
He then became Manager of The Royal Studs, a position he held for 16 years, reporting directly to The Queen on Her breeding stock and stud properties. During this time, he modernised operations across the yards and office, broadened the range of stud activities, and led four major development projects, including an award-winning foaling unit. He was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order (LVO) by The Queen in 2006.
Joe returned to the National Stud in January 2022 to support a management changeover, before handing over the reins in October of that year.
Joe now runs a private advisory service, he lectures for the TBA and National Stud, is a key contributor to the TBA’s online learning platform, TB-Ed, and is author of the TBA’s Broodmare Ownership Guide.
