Free Transfer of Ownership At The Upcoming Foal Sales
Good news for buyers at this year’s foal sales — the TBA, in partnership with Weatherbys and the Great British Bonus (GBB), is once again offering free Transfer of Ownership during two major upcoming sales:
- Goffs UK British National Hunt Breeders Showcase - Friday 31 October
- Tattersalls December Foal Sale - Tuesday 25 - Saturday 29 November 2025
If you are a British or Irish-based buyer picking up a foal at either sale, you can update ownership details with the General Stud Book (GSB) free of charge — as long as it is done on-site during the sale.
To take advantage of the offer, just visit the Weatherbys on-site office at either Goffs or Tattersalls and:
- Complete a Defra change of ownership form
- Provide the foal's paper passport for stamping
The process would usually cost £26 online or £33 by mail plus postage costs, so this is a great cost saving incentive for buyers at both sales.
Now in its second year, this initiative makes it easier (and cheaper) to stay compliant and ensures you are all set up for any GBB winnings down the line.
It is also worth remembering it is a legal requirement to notify the GSB of a change of ownership within 30 days. Keeping ownership records accurate is not only essential for GBB registration but plays a key role in maintaining the lifetime traceability of the thoroughbred and supporting equine welfare across the industry.
Passport Amnesty For Deceased Thoroughbreds
At the same sales breeders will once again have the opportunity to return passports for deceased thoroughbreds.
Passports can be handed in directly at the Weatherbys on-site office at either sale. No forms are needed, just include a note with the date of death.
Now in its second year, the amnesty is a simple way to help keep thoroughbred records accurate and up to date. It is also a good time to remind breeders that it is a legal requirement to notify the General Stud Book (GSB) within 30 days of a fatality.
Returning passports plays an important role in supporting:
- Accurate stud book and breeding records
- Equine welfare standards
If you are attending either sale and have any passports for deceased horses, please bring them along and drop them off. Every passport returned helps maintain the integrity of the industry.
