Equine Influenza Update - May 2026

Richard Newton (Director of Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance at EIDS) calls for continued "extreme vigilance" during the National Equine Influenza (EI) outbreak.

Breeders are reminded to:

  • Isolate new arrivals (14 days minimum)
  • Check the vaccination status and history of all horses on the farm
  • Monitor horses for signs of flu, including fever, nasal discharge and a harsh cough
  • Keep thoroughbreds separate from any non-thoroughbreds who are mixing with the general horse population
