Mares dominate in the final TBA 3-2-1 bonus of 2018 with Lily The Pink coming out on top.

June 14, 2018 |

The final TBA 3-2-1 bonus of 2018 was awarded to Lily the Pink following her win in the ITM Champion point-to-point Bumper at Stratford Racecourse on Friday 8 June.

The race proved to be a competitive renewal, with five of the nine runners being previous winners this season.  However it was the mares that dominated, with Lily the Pink staying on well to win under a confident ride from trainer’s sister, Leanda Tickle who had announced in advance that the race would be her last in the saddle.  Previous 3-2-1 bonus winner, Rapaport finished 1 ¾ lengths behind in second, and another promising mare Shaltoo in third.

The initiative, which has now been running for two seasons, gives owners of mares the opportunity to win a bonus of up to £3,000 in any of the three end-of-season bumpers run under Rules on licensed racecourses.  The bonus operates on a sliding scale with the highest placed mare in each of the bonus races receiving a £1,000 bonus, a further £1,000 if she is British bred and another £1,000 if she is owned by a TBA member.

Lily the Pink, a four-year-old daughter of Malinas was not only the first mares past the winning post but also bred in Great Britain and owned by TBA member, Paul Nicholas, meaning she qualified for the full bonus of £3,000.

When asked about winning the bonus, owner Paul Nicholas commented: ‘We were all extremely pleased to win the bumper race at Stratford, with the 3-2-1 bonus always being her target for the season. She ran well at Aintree; some things were learnt and it all came right at Stratford.

Support for these races has been very encouraging and the TBA should be congratulated on the mares bonus scheme, with the number of mares/fillies contesting speaking volumes.

Lily has been well campaigned by Joe Tickle Racing and we are hopeful of a successful season when goes over fences/hurdles in the future, as she showed natural ability when schooled for the first time.
