EMERGING EQUINE DISEASES SEMINAR - Monday 23rd June

The Threat Posed by ‘Exotic’ Diseases to the UK to be held at Tattersalls Park Paddocks, Newmarket

This seminar aims to raise awareness of certain ‘exotic’ diseases that may soon pose a real threat to the UK equine industry. Focussing specifically on African Horse Sickness (AHS) and West Nile Virus (WNV), the morning session will feature an overview of the current threat, an explanation of how these diseases are spread, and first-hand experiences of living with AHS and WNV, including clinical signs associated with these diseases, diagnosis and control methods.

The afternoon will concentrate on potential contingency plans for a response to any disease outbreak in the UK, the current status and future possibilities for new vaccine technologies for AHS and WNV, and what else can be done to protect both the equine population and industry.

Leading international speakers include Professor Alan Guthrie from University of Pretoria, South Africa, Dr Josie Traub-Dargatz, Colorado State University, USA, Professor Philip Mellor and Dr Chris Oura from the UK’s Institute of Animal Health, Pirbright, Dr Jules Minke from Merial, France and representatives from Defra. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion throughout the day.

Tickets cost £30 each and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
