National Hunt Breeders’ Prizes – Second Tier (40% of Breeders’ Prize)

From 2008 the National Hunt Breeders’ Prize Scheme now awards a lesser percentage, 40% of the prize, to horses which otherwise qualify under b) but were previously excluded by one or more of the following criteria –

a) the progeny of a stallion based overseas
b) had its first run on the Flat
c) was sold as a foal outside Great Britain

By introducing the Second Tier, the TBA is no longer excluding those mares owners who used the best stallion for their mare, irrespective of where it stood, or excluding those mare owners who set out to breed a dual purpose horse, whose first run was on the Flat, or those breeders who routinely sell a number of their stock as foals at overseas sales.

Recognition and Reward for Leading NH Mares

In September 2008 owners of the highest rated NH race mares, identified by their official rating in the Anglo-Irish Jump Classifications published annually in May, were notified by the TBA that their mare was a member of an elite group that had been identified to receive an incentive to breed winners of the future, entitling them to a voucher – which for the 2009 breeding season is worth up to £3,000 – against a nomination to a British based stallion of their choice. Subject to available funds, it is hoped this scheme can be offered to TBA members on an annual basis. For further details contact Pauline Stoddart at the TBA office.
