Sunday 3rd & Monday 4th August, TBA Golf Weekend
The 2008 TBA Golf Weekend was held at The Belfry, in the West Midlands on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th August. The event was a great success and was well supported with forty golfers, including stud owners and managers, trainers, racehorse owners and industry professionals, playing each day.
A leisurely 18-holes on the PGA National course started the weekend with the usual banter and a friendly sweepstake. Playing an individual stableford competition, John Johnstone was the winner on the day, with Wally Swinburn and Alex Eade a close second. In recognition of their good play their handicaps were docked before Monday's game.
A lively dinner and player auction took place on Sunday night, and our apologies go to any others diners in the restaurant that night!
Golf on Monday was a pairs competition, again stableford rules, but playing with ¾ handicaps and off the white competition tees. Playing the championship Brabazon course, which has hosted the Ryder Cup Matches four times, and is home to the Quinn Insurance British Masters, the TBA golfers were in for a tough round of golf. The winning team was Josh Apiafi and Alex Eade, representing the Professional Jockeys Association who took home the TBA Trophy, and not too far behind, John Sillett and Richard Minton, Team Two from Mill House Stud. The longest drive was won by Simon Mitchell of IMP Graphics, winning the Darley Cup. The Banstead Manor Cup for Nearest the Pin was won by Glen Latham from Weatherbys, and Nearest the Pin in Two Shots winning the Newsells Park Cup was won by Walter Swinburn.
Overall the event raised approximately £8,000 for two fillies' races, which will be held at Wetherby and Warwick. Racecourses are asked to contribute to the initiative, and if they do so they are included in the draw to win the race for that year.
The TBA would like to thank the hole sponsors, racecourse sponsors, the generosity of the players at the auction, and of course Michael Swinburn, who is the essential ingredient in making this event a success. We look forward to another great event next year and hope to see all you golfers there.
