Wednesday 25th June 2008-Yorkshire Regional Day
Members were treated to an entertaining day courtesy of Regional Representative Jack Berry on the last Regional Day of 2008, which began with a trip to Kevin Ryan's Hambleton Stables at Sutton Bank on the edge of the North York Moors. The day got off to an excellent start with members asked to mount up onto an old fashioned bus, for the day's transport. Beautifully refurbished by driver Granville the art deco inspired interior and chrome polished exterior added a nostalgic flavour to the day. First stop were the yard gallops and a short walk across the springy turf allowed members to experience the stunning views and bracing Yorkshire weather while watching horses work. Hospitality provided courtesy of Hambleton Racing Club which works in partnership with Kevin Ryan, included delicious fresh strawberries, orange juice and, for those who wanted, something a little stronger!
Famous horses and faces spotted on the gallops included Group 2 winner Wi Dud, 2006 Prix D'Labbaye winner Desert Lord and 2008 Ayr Gold Cup winner Advanced, and Tony Dobbin riding work for Kevin. Back at Hambleton Stables, we were allowed to wander at will around the yard, chat to members of staff and view horses in their boxes. All seemed relaxed and happy with hordes of visitors swarming around them even at feed time. The impressive string of well-bred horses viewed by members has provided Kevin with a wealth of talent that places him well up the trainers table this year.
Lunch at Whitestonecliffe Inn, Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe (the longest named village in England was followed by an afternoon visit to the World of James Herriot in Thirsk. Based in the original house where James Alfred Wight practiced as a veterinary surgeon and wrote the James Herriot stories, the museum gave a fascinating insight into life into the background behind the novels and their author.
Returning to the car park, the bus failed to make it up Sutton Bank and members were asked to dismount for a little light exercise, walking up Sutton Bank to avoid causing severe damage to Granville's pride and joy. However our thanks go to Regional Representatives Jack Berry and Kevin Ryan and his team for providing us with such an enjoyable day.
