Tuesday 10th June - Regional Day, West Midlands

Over 40 members in the West Midlands Region were treated to a fascinating day in June at David Redvers Tweenhills Farm and Stud. The weather was kind, and members were made very welcome by David and family as we gathered on the terrace which looks out across a typically rolling and green Gloucestershire countryside. Mares and foals on view in the paddock included the legendary Lady Rebecca, David’s star purchase, with an attractive Alflora filly at foot and back in foal to Shirocco. Other foals seen here included three smart colts by Sleeping Indian whose first foals are attracting positive comments from many breeders.

Following a parade of resident stallions Sleeping Indian, Trade Fair, Lucky Story, Fraam and Ishiguru, members traveled the short distance to Corse End Farm, where a purpose-built foaling barn housing 12 boxes provides a top-of-the range facility which fulfils the bio-security requirements that are so important on a stallion stud. Mares and foals, plus a large group of yearlings were viewed enjoying the benefits of grazing the large sheltered paddocks which form part of this former organic dairy farm.

Following a delicious lunch at the Corse Lawn House Hotel just a few minutes from Tweenhills, Louise Jones, nutrition specialist from Dodson and Horrell gave a short presentation on feeding breeding stock. The importance of appropriate mineral content and the monitoring and management of the growth rate of young stock formed the key steps needed to mitigate the onset of developmental orthopaedic disorders (DODs) that nearly 68% of TB foals will develop in some form.

Our thanks go to Louise for her presentation, and to David Redvers, his family and staff for making the day such a success. The enlightening commentary provided by David Redvers, his professional staff and the excellent facilities at Tweenhills Stud all combined to demonstrate why this Stud continues to go from strength to strength.
