This seminar aims to raise awareness of certain ‘exotic’ diseases that may soon pose a real threat to the UK equine industry. Focussing specifically on African Horse Sickness (AHS) and West Nile Virus (WNV), the morning session will feature an overview of the current threat, an explanation of how these diseases are spread, and first-hand experiences of living with AHS and WNV, including clinical signs associated with these diseases, diagnosis and control methods.
The afternoon will concentrate on potential contingency plans for a response to any disease outbreak in the UK, the current status and future possibilities for new vaccine technologies for AHS and WNV, and what else can be done to protect both the equine population and industry.
Leading international speakers include Professor Alan Guthrie from University of Pretoria, South Africa, Dr Josie Traub-Dargatz, Colorado State University, USA, Professor Philip Mellor and Dr Chris Oura from the UK’s Institute of Animal Health, Pirbright, Dr Jules Minke from Merial, France and representatives from Defra. - Sunday 6th July – Race for Life 2008
Thanks in no small part to the generosity of TBA members, over the past two years the ‘racing fillies’ from Stanstead House have raised a staggering £10,000 for Cancer Research UK.
For the third year running the girls are taking part in the Race for Life 5km run/walk in Cambridge on Sunday 6th July, and are again asking for your continued support to help raise funds – cheques large or small should be made out to Cancer Research UK and sent to Stanstead House, or you can contribute online at www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/thetba
Form:
Chef d’Equipe – Pauline Stoddart – broke down in this race last year, still not sound.
Louise Kemble – continues to train hard, improving sort.
Desna Tatler – small but feisty filly, will be in the frame.
Samantha Knight – hampered by slow runners last year, should show better form this year.
Christine Standley – lacks speed but not stamina, can always be relied upon to finish.
Caroline Turnbull – back to form and should run a good race, one to watch.
Annabel Webb – brilliant run last year, since moved to another yard, but remains a favourite.
NQ – Gavin Pritchard-Gordon – due, thankfully, to race conditions.
- TBA Golf Weekend at The Belfrey – Sunday 10th & Monday 11th August.
The weekend aims to raise prize money for two fillies races, a Flat race and a National Hunt race, through racecourse sponsorship, hole sponsors and a player auction. Last years prize money was split between the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Golf Day Mares Only Maiden Hurdle at Taunton in January and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Golf Day Fillies Handicap at Musselburgh to be held on the 20th May.
The Belfry, situated in the West Midlands, is home to the Quinn Insurance British Masters, and has hosted the Benson & Hedges International Open and the PGA Seniors’ Championship. Golfers will be playing the PGA National and the Brabazon course. The weekend is extremely well supported and with only forty places available those wishing to attend will have to register their interest quickly.
